Ilene Evans
African American Performer, Singer and Storyteller
Ilene Evans is an internationally known actress, singer and
storyteller. From the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland to
Phoenix, Arizona in the United States, Ilene has been telling her
stories through dance, music and the spoken word for 30 years.
As well as being an accomplished performer, storyteller, and singer Ilene is an educator and it is through her not for profit organization - Voices From The Earth based in Thomas, West Virginia she does much of her work. She is also developing a reputation as a key note speaker and gives inspired motivational presentations at conferences and meetings.
Ilene's Storytelling Programs include:
- Stories From Around The World - a program of traditions and legends told in tale and song.
- African American Stories, Songs and Games - rhythms and rhymes form African American culture and tradition.
- Brave Children - stories of strength and character from children the world round.
- Beyond the Grave - stories and songs to make us think and rethink our relationship to life and death including stories from Mexico, Russia, Ireland and Africa.
- Brer Tales -a collection of stories that feature Brer Rabbit and other folk from the Pee Dee River Swamp with their lessons of life and ingenuity guaranteed to enchant and delight.
The storytelling program can be tailored for age graded audiences and are suitable for families and communities. Workshop and activity programs are available with each program.
Ilene's One-Woman Theater Performances:
- Harvest of Dreams - a collection of African American poetry and prose, stories and sons; voices to remember old and new; including works by Waring Cuney, Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Ancella Bickley.
- They Call Me Miss Memphis - an evening with Mrs. Memphis Tennessee Garrison, Human Rights Activist, Civil Rights Leader, Social Worker and teacher. Mrs. Garrison welcomes some of her old students to her home to reminisce and dream about freedom, opportunity and equality equality through songs and stories.
- General Moses: Stories from the Life of Harriet Tubman - a dramatic interpretation of the life and achievements of Harriet Tubman who was known as General Moses. Harriet played an important part in the liberation of African American slave through the Underground Railroad during the Civil War in the United States. Harriet Tubman is one of the great unsung heroes of America - her life is celebrated and remembered in this remarkable performance.
The theater performances are optimally performed in a theater venue but are flexible and suitable spaces can be negotiated. Ilene can lead discussions and workshops to complement these performances and a hands on activity program is available.
